Obituary

Obituary for Jade Lee Marasigan

Jade Lee Marasigan was born on September 6, 2002 at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital. She is survived by her devoted parents Sooyeon Lee Marasigan and John Marasigan, her loving younger brother Canyon Stone Marasigan, and her beloved emotional support pet rats, Cheesy and Moo Moo.

She was raised in a house in Sherman Oaks, CA, and attended Encino Parents’ Nursery School, Kester Avenue Elementary School, George K. Porter Middle School, and graduated with Honors from Granada Hills Charter High School. Jade was an accomplished student athlete as a volleyball player at SG Elite Volleyball Club, Surfside Volleyball Club, Supernova Volleyball Club, and at Granada Hills Charter High School. She became a registered business owner of Jade Lee Jewelry at the age of 17, with presence at local Farmers’ Markets, her own e-commerce website, and Social Media platforms. Jade started pursuing a bachelor degree in Cardiovascular Sonography at West Coast Ultrasound Institute. As with many other teenagers, she was an avid content creator on the Social Media platforms Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Jade enjoyed photography, drawing, and playing musical instruments.

Jade will forever be remembered for her brilliant spirit, beautiful smile, curiosity, sense of adventure, infectious laughter, wild creativity, artistic and musical talent, innate need to care for animals, attention to detail, genuine sense of fairness and blunt truths, loyalty to friends and family, dedication, and intense love for those she shared her life. She was shy and generally comfortable following the lead of a pack. However, once she found a comfortable place in a group, Jade’s energy was felt by all. She was an LGBTQ advocate who identified as openly bisexual and was recently involved in her first true, loving relationship with her girlfriend.

Unfortunately, Jade struggled for years with undiagnosed depression starting in middle school. It wasn’t until late 2018, with the stress of junior year academics and pressures of playing high-level volleyball, that she started to self-harm which she hid. Once the visual evidence was no longer something she could conceal, her parents actively sought medical help. Jade’s depression led to multiple suicide attempts, recurring self harm, and trips to the emergency room, which triggered a response of proactive treatment by her pediatrician and a dedicated team of psychiatrists, therapists, and specialists at UCLA’s Child and Adolescent Mood Disorder Program, as well as her individual therapist. Her parents worked tirelessly to support Jade’s needs. However, Jade was adamant that she did not want special treatment nor be pitied by others because of her condition, so only immediate family and a small circle of loved ones were aware. She feared failing at becoming an adult, and had doubts that normalcy was achievable because of the cyclical bouts of ineffective treatments for her overwhelming Major Depressive Disorder and Social Anxiety. While she was able to find some happiness with her family and friends amidst the COVID-19 Quarantine, Jade had entered a deep depressive state for several days and couldn’t relieve her extreme mood. Tragically, Jade fell victim to her own mental health issues the morning of Friday August 21, 2020. Jade’s spirit left this Earth 16 days before her 18th Birthday. Her family and friends paid last respects on August 31, 2020, and her body was cremated on September 1, 2020.

Jade was a sweet, loving, kind, considerate, and amazing daughter, sister, pet parent, grand daughter, niece, cousin, teammate, and friend. Our lives are forever emblazoned by her spirit, and we shall always remember the blessed gift of having had her in our lives.

You were seen, heard, felt, valued, loved, and cherished more than you realized or accepted, Jade.

May you always be near and dear to our hearts and live vividly in our minds and dreams. Mama, Papa and Canyon will always talk to you and welcome you if you’d like to stop in and check on us from time to time. Our family is not complete without you. Until we reunite in another life... We pray that you have found happiness and feel no pain. We love you always. Rest In Peace, Jade Lee Bean.
