Raul Castro

June 8, 1946 — December 27, 2022

Raul Castro Castro was born in La Barranca de Otates, Jalisco, Mexico, the son of Lucia Castro Pulido and Angel Castro Lucero. His mother named him Manuel but his paternal grandmother registered him as Raul; most of his family called him Meño or Meñito. As a child, he was very curious and active and kept his parents very busy. At twelve years old, he went with his family to Ensenada, Baja California Norte, and grew up there. In the 1960s, he traveled to San Fernando, California. He met his life partner, Maria Rosa, at work. They were married, had five children and remained madly in love for over 44 years until she passed away in 2020.

Raul was a man of deep faith and, with his wife, instilled a love for God and the Blessed Mother in his children. He and his wife were parishioners at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. When he could no longer attend mass, he would watch it on television. Raul always tried to live according to his faith and was generous, helpful, and very respectful. Raul loved music and singing; among his favorite artists were Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Cornelio Reyna, Los Muecas, and Don Ho. He was a great example for his daughters, nieces, nephews, and many godchildren. He was a joyful person, always laughing and having a good time– even when times were tough he tried to make the best of any situation.

He started working when he was still a child, helping his father in the fields in the early morning before walking to school. When Raul first came to the United States, he worked at several different jobs before learning how to weld. He worked as a welder for airplane parts for many years until the recession of the 1990’s. Raul was proud to do honest hard work to support his family and held a variety of jobs before retiring as a driver for a production company. Even when at home, he kept himself busy watering and taking care of his many fruit trees and chile plants. He harvested and handed out lemons, avocados, zapotes, and guavas. He dried chiles and made his own–very spicy– salsa.

Raul’s other interests and hobbies included following news and politics, flying his remote control helicopters, playing loteria with his family, going to the casino, and spending time with his grandchild. For many years, he was part of a citizens band (CB) radio club called “Los Misioneros del Espacio,” or The Missionaries of Space and he made many great friends there. Over his life Raul traveled often to Mexico, mostly to visit family, but he also moved his family to Hawai’i twice– first to Maui in 1979 and later to Oahu in 1996. He deeply appreciated Hawaiian culture and approach to life. He made a final trip to Maui with his wife and two of his daughters in December of 2019.

Raul is survived by his loving daughters, Rosaura, Lorena, Alicia, and Lucia, his beloved son-in-laws Juan and Erik, his grandson Ollin Raul, his sister, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews.
